Max Wang

Max Wang (Dabney, 2019), took his own life on September 20, 2019. He was 22 years and 33 days old. This page was created to organize memorial activities. All Darbs with wiki accounts should be able to edit it.

We have finalized the schedule for the funeral, which will be held on October 12. The service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church. The address is 512 W Duarte Rd, Arcadia, CA 91007. There is no dress code, other than no sandles.

Caltech's Student Affairs office has arranged transportation to and from the church. Details will be posted here when available. In addition, several Darbs have offered their rooms and apartments for those coming from out of town. If you are in need of housing during this time, please let Will Xu or another current Darb know so we can direct you to a space.

Tentative Schedule:

  • Private Viewing: 9:00 - 9:45 am
  • Service: 10:00 am
  • Reception: 11:00 am
  • End: 1:00 pm

The private viewing will be for family and close friends. If you are interested in coming, please email Will Xu or Jennifer Xu. The service will be closed casket, hosted by Pastor Albert Chai. If you are interested in coming, please fill out this form so we have an approximate head count for food. The form will probably close by Oct. 6 so that we can order food.

We will be sending out e-vites after a week or so to all who have signed up. If you did not get an e-vite, please feel free to still show up. Also, feel free to distribute this link to others who may be interested in signing up.

For the funeral, we are planning to create a short, couple minute video commemorating Max's life. We will be using pictures provided by his mom, as well as Dabney historian archives. Unfortunately, the person in charge of the video, Will Xu, has zero artistic talent. If you are interested in helping, please contact him.

We are setting up a GoFundMe for Max's mom to pay for funeral expenses, living costs, and charity. She is very passionate about giving support to charities that advocate for mental health and those that help mothers in her position. If you are able to, please help her cause or help forward her message. It would mean a lot.

A group of Darbs are planning on stringing together 1000 origami cranes to present to Max's mom. A Japanese legend promises that if someone folds and strings together 1000 origami cranes, then they will have one wish granted by the gods. Since Max was extremely passionate about origami, we feel like this is the perfect way to commemorate his life and honor his legacy. If you are interested in helping, here is a spreadsheet keeping track of the number of folded cranes. There is a supply of origami paper in Dabney house, and be sure to drop off your folded cranes in Dabney house before the funeral.

We are planning on painting the mural near quiet alley, starting sometime after rotation. Not many details been finalized, but if you are interested in helping, Will Xu can put you in contact with those who oversee painting it.

There is a card that people can sign and write messages in, located in Dabney Lounge.
